Five Big Ideas in Beginning Reading
In 1997, congress asked the NICHD, along with the U.S. Department of Education, to form the National Reading Panel to review research on how children learn to read and determine which methods of teaching reading are most effective based on the research evidence. The panel included members from different backgrounds, including school administrators, working teachers, and scientists involved in reading research.
The findings made it clear that the best approach to reading is one that incorporates the five big ideas in reading:

International Reading Association
The International Reading Association (IRA) was founded in 1956 as a professional organization for those involved in teaching reading to learners of all ages. The organization is committed to promoting high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction, disseminating research and information about reading, and encouraging the lifetime reading habit.

Reading Rockets is a national multimedia project offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.
The Reading Rockets project is comprised of PBS television programs, available on videotape and DVD; online services, including the websites ReadingRockets.org and ColorinColorado.org; and professional development opportunities. Reading Rockets is an educational initiative of WETA, the flagship public television and radio station in the nation's capital, and is funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Publications on Reading
The NICHD, established by congress in 1962, conducts and supports research on topics related to the health of children, adults, families, and populations. Some of these topics include:
- Reducing infant deaths;
- Improving the health of women, men, and families;
- Understanding reproductive health and fertility/infertility;
- Learning about growth and development;
- Examining, preventing and treating problems of birth defects, mental retardation, and developmental disabilities; and
- Enhancing well-being of persons through the lifespan with optimal rehabilitation research.
NICHD also houses helpful booklets on a variety of topics, including beginning reading. The list includes

University of Kansas Center for Research and Learning
The Center for Research on Learning, located at the University of Kansas, has designed their center to research problems in education and work to place solutions that make a difference into the hands of educators, learners, employers, and policy makers.
