Special Education: The Role of State Support Teams
Improving Results for All Children
State Support Teams support the area of special education and compliance through the Ohio Improvement Process (OIP). The Ohio Improvement Process (OIP) is Ohio’s strategy for ensuring a systematic and coherent approach for building the capacity of all districts and schools in meaningful and real ways that allow districts to improve instructional practice on a district-wide basis, and make and sustain significant improvement in student performance against grade-level benchmarks aligned with academic content standards for all students across the district.
The State Support Team Region 1 provides levels of support to building, district and community schools that have or are in the process of implementing OIP, professional development and technical assistance on research-based practices, and collaborate to support effective postsecondary transition and universal design for learning to meet the needs of students with disabilities and those at risk.
Special Education Compliance
The State Support Team Region 1 provides levels of guidance, training, technical assistance and information related to state and federal laws and regulations regarding the education of children with disabilities and those at risk of being identified. The State Support Teams provide assistance and training to districts involved in required special education monitoring, accountability activities and complaint resolution. State Support Teams also provide department of education-approved training to those willing to serve as surrogate parents.
Parents and the Community
The State Support Team Region 1 provides information, technical assistance, and learning opportunities to parents who have children with disabilities and their family members. This assistance is provided in a variety of ways, some of which include linking parents and families to their community resources and providers. The State Support Teams also provide access to agencies, organizations, news and events through their Web sites.
