Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Training (winter)
Dec 7 @ 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

“The lack of phonemic awareness is the most powerful determinant of the likelihood of failure to read.” (Adams, 1990)

This training is ideal for districts and schools whose current literacy curriculum does not have a focus in explicit phonemic awareness instruction. During these two sessions, you will use the Heggerty curriculum to gain an understanding of phonemic awareness and its importance in a child’s ability to read.

Session 1:

  • learn what and why of phonemic awareness
  • explore the scope and sequence of eight phonological and phonemic awareness skills and the two early literacy skills
  • practice the hand motions within the lessons

Session 2:

  • learn how to conduct assessments
  • review progress monitoring in phonemic awareness
  • discuss interventions for students needing additional support

You will receive the book Phonemic Awareness by Michael Heggerty, and be given time to practice using the curriculum and learn from your peers in this engaging, interactive training.

Attendee Expectations

Participants will:

  • keep a journal between sessions to document questions, comments, and findings as they implement the curriculum
  • conduct job-embedded bridge to practice assignments between sessions
  • use the resources provided in the shared Padlet

We will explore practices that address the six essential domains of adolescent literacy instruction:

  • Disciplinary literacy
  • Vocabulary discussion
  • Digital literacy
  • Multiple texts
  • Writing to learn

We will read and discuss This is Disciplinary Literacy by ReLeah Cossett Lent (book provided) and examine how clarity, habits of the mind, and vocabulary are impacted in disciplinary literacy.

Together we will build a solid theoretical framework of adolescent literacy and disciplinary literacy, and develop and implement literacy plans.

This virtual network series is designed for administrators and district leaders to explore evidence-based practices around family and community engagement. Each 2-hour session will focus on a particular topic, including:

  • a focus on Joyce Epstein’s six keys to family engagement
  • time to create a well-rounded action plan to incorporate family engagement into your school improvement plans.

Emergent Literacy Series

This series designed specifically for preschool staff will increase your knowledge and practice of emergent literacy strategies for children, birth through age five.

Part 1: Introduction to Emergent Literacy & Teaching Early Phonological Awareness
Gain a greater understanding of emergent literacy and the importance of developing phonological awareness skills in young children. Participants will:

  • explore the role of each lobe of the brain in the development of the “reading brain”
  • learn the components of phonological processing and its contributions to early literacy development
  • begin to understand the sequences of development in the areas of rhyming, alliteration, blending, and segmenting
  • gain instructional strategies to facilitate development of phonological awareness skills

 

Part 2: Developing Oral Language & Vocabulary for Emergent Literacy
In this session, we will focus specifically on developing oral language and vocabulary skills in young children. Upon completion of this training, you will:

  • understand the significance of oral language as a component of emergent literacy
  • plan for explicit and intentional instruction to develop oral language skills in young children
  • identify and explain the three tiers, or levels of vocabulary in text
  • demonstrate instructional strategies, aligned with brain research, to build vocabulary and oral language

 

Part 3: Building Print Awareness through Interactive Read-Alouds
The final session is centered on using read-alouds as a strategy for building print awareness skills in young children. Content is focused on:

  • understanding why print knowledge is important for emergent and early literacy
  • identifying the four dimensions of print knowledge
  • using books to develop print awareness and knowledge at the preschool level
  • accessing materials to aid in classroom, library, or home implementation of print referencing techniques
  • identifying and distinguishing books for shared reading to teach components of emergent literacy

  • complete Classroom Connection assignments between sessions
  • Utilize Padlet resources created for this series

Understanding the How and Why of Sound Walls
Feb 4 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Discover why sound walls should replace word walls in the classroom to strengthen phonological and orthographic skills and explore effective ways to implement sound walls to benefit all children including English language learners and students with disabilities.

You will learn how to set up and effectively use a sound wall with the purpose of elevating daily Tier I instruction for all students by reviewing 44 speech sounds (including 18 vowel sounds) and providing spelling options for each sound. This daily review helps aromaticity in student ability to access the sounds and match spelling to each sound.

This one-day training is an extension of both the SST 1 Emergent Literacy Series and Heggerty professional learning courses.

Emergent Literacy Series

This series designed specifically for preschool staff will increase your knowledge and practice of emergent literacy strategies for children, birth through age five.

Part 1: Introduction to Emergent Literacy & Teaching Early Phonological Awareness
Gain a greater understanding of emergent literacy and the importance of developing phonological awareness skills in young children. Participants will:

  • explore the role of each lobe of the brain in the development of the “reading brain”
  • learn the components of phonological processing and its contributions to early literacy development
  • begin to understand the sequences of development in the areas of rhyming, alliteration, blending, and segmenting
  • gain instructional strategies to facilitate development of phonological awareness skills

 

Part 2: Developing Oral Language & Vocabulary for Emergent Literacy
In this session, we will focus specifically on developing oral language and vocabulary skills in young children. Upon completion of this training, you will:

  • understand the significance of oral language as a component of emergent literacy
  • plan for explicit and intentional instruction to develop oral language skills in young children
  • identify and explain the three tiers, or levels of vocabulary in text
  • demonstrate instructional strategies, aligned with brain research, to build vocabulary and oral language

 

Part 3: Building Print Awareness through Interactive Read-Alouds
The final session is centered on using read-alouds as a strategy for building print awareness skills in young children. Content is focused on:

  • understanding why print knowledge is important for emergent and early literacy
  • identifying the four dimensions of print knowledge
  • using books to develop print awareness and knowledge at the preschool level
  • accessing materials to aid in classroom, library, or home implementation of print referencing techniques
  • identifying and distinguishing books for shared reading to teach components of emergent literacy

Family Engagement Community of Practice

Family engagement has always been important, but is even more so now that we begin to recover from a global pandemic. This virtual network series is designed for administrators and district leaders to explore evidence-based practices around family and community engagement. Each 2-hour session will focus on a particular topic, including:

  • serving families using a multi-tiered system to meet everyone’s needs
  • a focus on Joyce Epstein’s six keys to family engagement
  • time to create a well-rounded action plan to incorporate family engagement into your school improvement plans.

Understanding the How and Why of Sound Walls

Discover why sound walls should replace word walls in the classroom to strengthen phonological and orthographic skills and explore effective ways to implement sound walls to benefit all children including English language learners and students with disabilities.

You will learn how to set up and effectively use a sound wall with the purpose of elevating daily Tier I instruction for all students by reviewing 44 speech sounds (including 18 vowel sounds) and providing spelling options for each sound. This daily review helps aromaticity in student ability to access the sounds and match spelling to each sound.

This one-day training is an extension of both the SST 1 Emergent Literacy Series and Heggerty professional learning courses.

Ohio TESOL: How to Form Family Partnerships with Purpose and Power

Ohio TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is hosting a series of trainings throughout the 2021-22 school year.

On May 3, 2022 Leila Kubesch will discuss How to Form Family Partnerships with Purpose and Power

Speaker Bio: Leila teaches foreign languages and English as a Second Language. Having committed to teaching in high-need schools, she became resourceful in securing unique opportunities for her students. With the goal of empowering all youth in the same manner as those in affluent communities, she fosters community partnerships, engages leaders for innovative learning, and instills a mindset of dreaming big through large-scale service-learning projects that stem from youth initiatives.

The work of her students has landed in museums around the country and won national recognition. Her passion for equity and social justice extends beyond the classroom. She served as an advocate for emancipated foster youth in Ohio by raising awareness of the plight of these youth, who too often became homeless.

She raised awareness by presenting to large audiences including TEDx Cincinnati, where she won the Audience Choice Award for her talk. She spoke with politicians and dedicated her effort until House Bill 50 passed, enabling foster youth in Ohio to have homes until age 21.She believes the success she experiences with her students stems from her intentional creation of family and community partnerships.

Leila is the 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year, 2020 National Teacher of the Year Finalist, 2021 NEA Horace Mann Award Recipient, and 2020 National Toyota Family Teacher of the Year.

About the Presenters

Dr. Kevin J. Fleming is an educator, national speaker, entrepreneur and author. He has dedicated 20+ years to changing the dialog around eliminating the skills gap, helping students secure a competitive advantage while equipping their potential, and guiding students to identify and pursue their purpose on purpose. To support this dialog he has produced multiple, viral animation videos including Success in the New Economy, has written three books including the bestseller, (Re)Defining the Goal, has elevated Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs nationally via inspirational professional development, and secured/managed over $75 million to advance economic & educational opportunity.

Dr. Fleming currently leads the Planning and Development unit as a Vice President at Norco College (part of Riverside Community College District, CA) having previously supported over 40 CTE programs as well as multiple state and federal grants as a Dean of Instruction. Dr. Fleming has helped launch a national dialogue about acquiring the right knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in the new economy. His message encourages the everyday education leaders (teachers, counselors, policymakers) to support America’s talented students to make informed career decisions through the development of the 4 skills necessary for a great start: academic skills – life skills – employability skills – technical skills.

Hans Meeder is co-founder and President of the National Center for College and Career Transitions (NC3T). The National Center for College and Career Transitions is a mission-driven organization that provides coaching, technical assistance, and technology platforms so every student has the opportunity to participate in Career Connected Learning. Mr. Meeder and his organization, NC3T, have provided consulting, technical assistance, and professional development in over 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Meeder is the author of several books and online courses, including The Power and Promise of Pathways, the Pathways System Design Suite, the STEM Leader Guide, Career Connected Learning 101, and Pathways Leadership Essentials. Mr. Meeder has an extensive and varied career in education and workforce policy and government leadership, with an emphasis on high school redesign, career and technical education, and workforce quality.

Prior to founding NC3T, Meeder served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Education Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education. In this role, Meeder led the Department of Education’s High School Initiative and guided policy development for implementation of the Perkins Act and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.

Mr. Meeder served as Senior Vice President for Workforce Development and Postsecondary Learning at the National Alliance of Business and as Executive Director of the 21st Century Workforce Commission, a Presidential Commission that made policy recommendations relating to the Information Technology workforce. Mr. Meeder also worked as Education Policy and Outreach Director for the House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Mr. Meeder lives in Columbia, Maryland with his wife and is the parent of four grown children. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park and also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Global Campus.

About the Presenters

Dr. Kevin J. Fleming is an educator, national speaker, entrepreneur and author. He has dedicated 20+ years to changing the dialog around eliminating the skills gap, helping students secure a competitive advantage while equipping their potential, and guiding students to identify and pursue their purpose on purpose. To support this dialog he has produced multiple, viral animation videos including Success in the New Economy, has written three books including the bestseller, (Re)Defining the Goal, has elevated Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs nationally via inspirational professional development, and secured/managed over $75 million to advance economic & educational opportunity.

Dr. Fleming currently leads the Planning and Development unit as a Vice President at Norco College (part of Riverside Community College District, CA) having previously supported over 40 CTE programs as well as multiple state and federal grants as a Dean of Instruction. Dr. Fleming has helped launch a national dialogue about acquiring the right knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in the new economy. His message encourages the everyday education leaders (teachers, counselors, policymakers) to support America’s talented students to make informed career decisions through the development of the 4 skills necessary for a great start: academic skills – life skills – employability skills – technical skills.

Hans Meeder is co-founder and President of the National Center for College and Career Transitions (NC3T). The National Center for College and Career Transitions is a mission-driven organization that provides coaching, technical assistance, and technology platforms so every student has the opportunity to participate in Career Connected Learning. Mr. Meeder and his organization, NC3T, have provided consulting, technical assistance, and professional development in over 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Meeder is the author of several books and online courses, including The Power and Promise of Pathways, the Pathways System Design Suite, the STEM Leader Guide, Career Connected Learning 101, and Pathways Leadership Essentials. Mr. Meeder has an extensive and varied career in education and workforce policy and government leadership, with an emphasis on high school redesign, career and technical education, and workforce quality.

Prior to founding NC3T, Meeder served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Education Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education. In this role, Meeder led the Department of Education’s High School Initiative and guided policy development for implementation of the Perkins Act and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.

Mr. Meeder served as Senior Vice President for Workforce Development and Postsecondary Learning at the National Alliance of Business and as Executive Director of the 21st Century Workforce Commission, a Presidential Commission that made policy recommendations relating to the Information Technology workforce. Mr. Meeder also worked as Education Policy and Outreach Director for the House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Mr. Meeder lives in Columbia, Maryland with his wife and is the parent of four grown children. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park and also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Global Campus.

ODE: All Students Can Read: Providing Literacy-Focused Assessment and Instruction for Students with Disabilities

This professional learning series is a collaborative offering from the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Approaches to Teaching and Professional
Learning and the Office for Exceptional Children. The series aims to build the knowledge and skills of special educators in reading science. The series will
introduce the research and theoretical models supporting reading science, assessment and instruction within a multi-tiered system of support and
developing reading profiles that support the instructional design to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.

The Science of reading: Meeting the Diverse Needs of Students with Disabilities This session will provide a background in literacy, including research and theoretical models, critical to providing appropriate assessment and instruction. Multi-Tiered System of Supports for Literacy This session will describe the purpose of a multi-tiered system of supports for literacy and how this framework can support students
with disabilities in all tiers of instruction, including through core instruction based on the science of reading. Specific connections will be made to pre-referral interventions and how students identified as having a disability receive instruction in each tier.

You will learn alongside and network with other literacy leaders from across Region 1 to plan and create a structured literacy model with a comprehensive assessment system. You will use evidence-based literacy practices and strategies to promote positive outcomes for all learners following the timelines and requirements of Ohio’s dyslexia legislation.

During the 2021-22 school year, you will:

  • increase your knowledge in the areas of:
    • dyslexia
    • assessments for Universal & Diagnostic Literacy Screening Measures
    • structured literacy instructional approaches across all tiers of instruction for all learners
    • structured literacy preventative early intervention
    • research & evidence in system development & implementation for professional learning
  • complete assignments between sessions to develop a data-rich local action plan that meets the guidelines for Ohio’s dyslexia legislation and addresses local needs

Guest presenter Dr. Kevin Fleming’s inspiring presentation discusses new paradigms and tangible action steps for career and technical education to help all students gain a competitive advantage. Technical skills are the new currency in the 21st century, but how do we balance preparing students for both higher education and the workforce? Producer of the viral animated video Success in the New Economy, he will make a clear case for students to explore career choices early, make informed decisions when declaring their college education goal, and consider technical skill acquisition and real-world application in tandem with general education. Finally, his new video will both invigorate and challenge the evolution of career readiness.

Discover how to kickstart (or reboot) your partnerships so you can start 2022-23 with a strong system of support for work based learning, Industry-recognized Credentials, the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal, and the Career Advisory Policy in general.
