2021 OLAC & PBIS Showcase

For more than 10 years, the Ohio Leadership Advisory Council has hosted the OLAC Action Forum—an annual event designed to bring hundreds of Ohio superintendents, principals, teachers, and others together to share stories about how district and building leadership teams and teachers-based teams are working together to impact all learners.

Since 2015, the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio PBIS Network have hosted the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Showcase, an annual event focused on showcasing Ohio’s schools implementing PBIS with high fidelity. This event brings together hundreds of Ohio principals, teachers, counselors, and others to network and share best practices around PBIS implementation to ensure safe and supportive school environments.

With a shared vision for building the capacity of those who lead, teach, and serve students in Ohio’s schools and beyond, we are excited to continue the OLAC and Ohio PBIS Network partnership to host a joint event again this year. This one-day, virtual conference will combine the best of the OLAC Action Forum and the Ohio PBIS Showcase.

PBIS Tier III Training
Jan 20 @ 8:30 am – 3:00 pm

While PBIS Tier I and Tier II frameworks are extremely effective in preventing and managing student behavior, there are children who need additional individualized supports. This PBIS Tier III training is intended for schools who are implementing Tiers I and II with fidelity.

Teams comprised of an administrator, school psychologist, counselor, intervention specialist, and other staff members will learn how to create functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans to help meet the needs of students with more challenging behaviors.

Attendee Expectations

Participants will:

  • complete planning and/or reflection tasks during the training session
  • be invited to attend PBIS Virtual Office Hours to receive follow up support
  • complete a survey to indicate the effects the training had on their Tier III practices
  • within one year, participate in a Tier III Fidelity Inventory to measure progress and create an action plan of next steps

On April 5, 2022 Betty Kern will discuss Student Brain Breaks and Teacher Self Care

Abstract Research supports inserting brain breaks (physical activity) into lessons or between lessons in the classroom to help students make connections and retain information!  In this session, we will briefly discuss the research behind brain breaks and follow up with participation in several brain break activities!  You will leave with tools and resources to help you implement brain breaks the next day in your classroom!  What is usually last on a teacher’s list to make time for?  Teacher self care!  Let’s explore easy ways to implement some self-care strategies to help you manage the demands of teaching in an ever-changing environment!

Speaker Bio: Betty Kern, MS, CSCS is a professional educator with over 30 years teaching experience.  Betty has taught a variety of subjects including high school math, junior high math, junior high health, high school health, high school physical education, junior high physical education and elementary physical education.  Betty was named the Ohio Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2017.  She has presented at the National SHAPE America conference yearly since 2008 and has presented in numerous state and regional physical education and health conferences.

Ohio TESOL: How to Form Family Partnerships with Purpose and Power

Ohio TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is hosting a series of trainings throughout the 2021-22 school year.

On May 3, 2022 Leila Kubesch will discuss How to Form Family Partnerships with Purpose and Power

Speaker Bio: Leila teaches foreign languages and English as a Second Language. Having committed to teaching in high-need schools, she became resourceful in securing unique opportunities for her students. With the goal of empowering all youth in the same manner as those in affluent communities, she fosters community partnerships, engages leaders for innovative learning, and instills a mindset of dreaming big through large-scale service-learning projects that stem from youth initiatives.

The work of her students has landed in museums around the country and won national recognition. Her passion for equity and social justice extends beyond the classroom. She served as an advocate for emancipated foster youth in Ohio by raising awareness of the plight of these youth, who too often became homeless.

She raised awareness by presenting to large audiences including TEDx Cincinnati, where she won the Audience Choice Award for her talk. She spoke with politicians and dedicated her effort until House Bill 50 passed, enabling foster youth in Ohio to have homes until age 21.She believes the success she experiences with her students stems from her intentional creation of family and community partnerships.

Leila is the 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year, 2020 National Teacher of the Year Finalist, 2021 NEA Horace Mann Award Recipient, and 2020 National Toyota Family Teacher of the Year.

(Re)Defining the Goal: The True Path to Career Readiness in the 21st Century

Explore new paradigms and create new action steps to help all students gain a competitive advantage.

Guest presenter Dr. Kevin Fleming’s inspiring presentation discusses new paradigms and tangible action steps for career and technical education to help all students gain a competitive advantage. Technical skills are the new currency in the 21st century, but how do we balance preparing students for both higher education and the workforce? Producer of the viral animated video Success in the New Economy, he will make a clear case for students to explore career choices early, make informed decisions when declaring their college education goal, and consider technical skill acquisition and real-world application in tandem with general education. Finally, his new video will both invigorate and challenge the evolution of career readiness.

Discover how to kickstart (or reboot) your partnerships so you can start 2022-23 with a strong system of support for work based learning, Industry-recognized Credentials, the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal, and the Career Advisory Policy in general.

About the Presenters

Dr. Kevin J. Fleming is an educator, national speaker, entrepreneur and author. He has dedicated 20+ years to changing the dialog around eliminating the skills gap, helping students secure a competitive advantage while equipping their potential, and guiding students to identify and pursue their purpose on purpose. To support this dialog he has produced multiple, viral animation videos including Success in the New Economy, has written three books including the bestseller, (Re)Defining the Goal, has elevated Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs nationally via inspirational professional development, and secured/managed over $75 million to advance economic & educational opportunity.

Dr. Fleming currently leads the Planning and Development unit as a Vice President at Norco College (part of Riverside Community College District, CA) having previously supported over 40 CTE programs as well as multiple state and federal grants as a Dean of Instruction. Dr. Fleming has helped launch a national dialogue about acquiring the right knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in the new economy. His message encourages the everyday education leaders (teachers, counselors, policymakers) to support America’s talented students to make informed career decisions through the development of the 4 skills necessary for a great start: academic skills – life skills – employability skills – technical skills.

Hans Meeder is co-founder and President of the National Center for College and Career Transitions (NC3T). The National Center for College and Career Transitions is a mission-driven organization that provides coaching, technical assistance, and technology platforms so every student has the opportunity to participate in Career Connected Learning. Mr. Meeder and his organization, NC3T, have provided consulting, technical assistance, and professional development in over 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Meeder is the author of several books and online courses, including The Power and Promise of Pathways, the Pathways System Design Suite, the STEM Leader Guide, Career Connected Learning 101, and Pathways Leadership Essentials. Mr. Meeder has an extensive and varied career in education and workforce policy and government leadership, with an emphasis on high school redesign, career and technical education, and workforce quality.

Prior to founding NC3T, Meeder served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Education Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education. In this role, Meeder led the Department of Education’s High School Initiative and guided policy development for implementation of the Perkins Act and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.

Mr. Meeder served as Senior Vice President for Workforce Development and Postsecondary Learning at the National Alliance of Business and as Executive Director of the 21st Century Workforce Commission, a Presidential Commission that made policy recommendations relating to the Information Technology workforce. Mr. Meeder also worked as Education Policy and Outreach Director for the House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Mr. Meeder lives in Columbia, Maryland with his wife and is the parent of four grown children. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park and also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Global Campus.

About the Presenters

Dr. Kevin J. Fleming is an educator, national speaker, entrepreneur and author. He has dedicated 20+ years to changing the dialog around eliminating the skills gap, helping students secure a competitive advantage while equipping their potential, and guiding students to identify and pursue their purpose on purpose. To support this dialog he has produced multiple, viral animation videos including Success in the New Economy, has written three books including the bestseller, (Re)Defining the Goal, has elevated Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs nationally via inspirational professional development, and secured/managed over $75 million to advance economic & educational opportunity.

Dr. Fleming currently leads the Planning and Development unit as a Vice President at Norco College (part of Riverside Community College District, CA) having previously supported over 40 CTE programs as well as multiple state and federal grants as a Dean of Instruction. Dr. Fleming has helped launch a national dialogue about acquiring the right knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in the new economy. His message encourages the everyday education leaders (teachers, counselors, policymakers) to support America’s talented students to make informed career decisions through the development of the 4 skills necessary for a great start: academic skills – life skills – employability skills – technical skills.

Hans Meeder is co-founder and President of the National Center for College and Career Transitions (NC3T). The National Center for College and Career Transitions is a mission-driven organization that provides coaching, technical assistance, and technology platforms so every student has the opportunity to participate in Career Connected Learning. Mr. Meeder and his organization, NC3T, have provided consulting, technical assistance, and professional development in over 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Meeder is the author of several books and online courses, including The Power and Promise of Pathways, the Pathways System Design Suite, the STEM Leader Guide, Career Connected Learning 101, and Pathways Leadership Essentials. Mr. Meeder has an extensive and varied career in education and workforce policy and government leadership, with an emphasis on high school redesign, career and technical education, and workforce quality.

Prior to founding NC3T, Meeder served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Education in the U.S. Department of Education Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education. In this role, Meeder led the Department of Education’s High School Initiative and guided policy development for implementation of the Perkins Act and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.

Mr. Meeder served as Senior Vice President for Workforce Development and Postsecondary Learning at the National Alliance of Business and as Executive Director of the 21st Century Workforce Commission, a Presidential Commission that made policy recommendations relating to the Information Technology workforce. Mr. Meeder also worked as Education Policy and Outreach Director for the House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Mr. Meeder lives in Columbia, Maryland with his wife and is the parent of four grown children. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park and also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Maryland’s Global Campus.

Presented in partnership with the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West, you will hear from two amazing and motivating speakers that will help you reinvigorate your career planning program for students.

Technical skills are the new currency in the 21st century, but how do we balance preparing students for both higher education and the workforce? Producer of the viral animated video Success in the New Economy, he will make a clear case for students to explore career choices early, make informed decisions when declaring their college education goal, and consider technical skill acquisition and real-world application in tandem with general education. Finally, his new video will both invigorate and challenge the evolution of career readiness.

Discover how to kickstart (or reboot) your partnerships so you can start 2022-23 with a strong system of support for work based learning, Industry-recognized Credentials, the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal, and the Career Advisory Policy in general.
