One of the greatest challenges in special education is to address the needs of students whose home language is not English. Practitioners in special education face the question: Is this a language difference? Or, is this a language impairment? The answer to this question requires to be knowledgeable of at least the following:

  • Process of acquisition of a second language
  • Acculturation
  • Bilingualism
  • Child development
  • Speech-Language milestones that are culturally sensitive
  • Baseline and comparison population.

On February 1, 2022 Shawna Benson from OCALI will speak about UDL/Differentiation through Content

Shawna Benson has worked at OCALI since 2008. She is the Program Director for the Teaching Diverse Learners Center. In addition to working with OCALI, she has also worked within Ohio School Districts, ESC, SST, DODD, private preschool and in higher education as an educator, Assistive Technology Specialist, Autism and Low Incidence Specialist, Literacy Specialist, Associate Professor and Director of Disability Services. She has experience co-teaching in inclusive settings and providing academic instruction and intervention to students with a wide range of exceptionalities, ages, strengths and needs which has provided her with a wealth of information that she now applies to her current work.

Their book, Equity by Design uses the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework as a means and connection to develop inclusive and socially just classrooms.

In this book study, participants will discuss these relevant topics and learn practical applications for using the UDL framework. We will discuss removing barriers that affect the students we serve, and put our learning into practice to create a culturally responsive learning environment for all students. Participants will be asked to respond to reflection questions between each meeting.

On April 5, 2022 Betty Kern will discuss Student Brain Breaks and Teacher Self Care

Abstract Research supports inserting brain breaks (physical activity) into lessons or between lessons in the classroom to help students make connections and retain information!  In this session, we will briefly discuss the research behind brain breaks and follow up with participation in several brain break activities!  You will leave with tools and resources to help you implement brain breaks the next day in your classroom!  What is usually last on a teacher’s list to make time for?  Teacher self care!  Let’s explore easy ways to implement some self-care strategies to help you manage the demands of teaching in an ever-changing environment!

Speaker Bio: Betty Kern, MS, CSCS is a professional educator with over 30 years teaching experience.  Betty has taught a variety of subjects including high school math, junior high math, junior high health, high school health, high school physical education, junior high physical education and elementary physical education.  Betty was named the Ohio Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2017.  She has presented at the National SHAPE America conference yearly since 2008 and has presented in numerous state and regional physical education and health conferences.

Ohio TESOL: How to Form Family Partnerships with Purpose and Power

Ohio TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is hosting a series of trainings throughout the 2021-22 school year.

On May 3, 2022 Leila Kubesch will discuss How to Form Family Partnerships with Purpose and Power

Speaker Bio: Leila teaches foreign languages and English as a Second Language. Having committed to teaching in high-need schools, she became resourceful in securing unique opportunities for her students. With the goal of empowering all youth in the same manner as those in affluent communities, she fosters community partnerships, engages leaders for innovative learning, and instills a mindset of dreaming big through large-scale service-learning projects that stem from youth initiatives.

The work of her students has landed in museums around the country and won national recognition. Her passion for equity and social justice extends beyond the classroom. She served as an advocate for emancipated foster youth in Ohio by raising awareness of the plight of these youth, who too often became homeless.

She raised awareness by presenting to large audiences including TEDx Cincinnati, where she won the Audience Choice Award for her talk. She spoke with politicians and dedicated her effort until House Bill 50 passed, enabling foster youth in Ohio to have homes until age 21.She believes the success she experiences with her students stems from her intentional creation of family and community partnerships.

Leila is the 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year, 2020 National Teacher of the Year Finalist, 2021 NEA Horace Mann Award Recipient, and 2020 National Toyota Family Teacher of the Year.

Integrated Comprehensive Systems for Equity June 21-23

ICS logoIntegrated Comprehensive Systems of Equity provides a Four Cornerstone Framework and Process to eliminate inequities in K-12 schools and post-secondary institutions, based on Implementation Science. ICS Equity will be tied to your district’s mission, vision, and improvement plan to ensure that your equity plans are not simply viewed as another initiative, but as a framework and process to set equity as the core of your district’s work.

Attendee Expectations

Following the training, participants will:

  • discuss equity and social justice at future DLT/BLT meetings
  • learn from ICS Equity training modules and share information with DLT and BLT
  • share district/building equity data with State Support Team 1 through coaching sessions, survey completion, and/or DLT meetings
  • collect data to promote an equitable system for each student and adult
  • create a district/building equity plan
  • include SST 1 consultant in your Equity Journey

About the Presenters

photo of Dr. Elise FratturaDr. Elise Frattura

Elise Frattura is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, having taught for over 20 years in the School of Education. From 2003-2013, Dr. Frattura served as an Associate Dean and Department Chairperson for the School of Education. Prior to her role at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Dr. Frattura was a teacher and a central office administrator from 1983-2001, during which time she also served as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Dr. Frattura taught graduate courses for principals and district office administrators in the areas of: Diversity in Elementary and Secondary Education, Advanced Analysis and Design of School Systems, Politics and Educational Organizational Cultures, and Non-Discrimination Law. While a professor, she co-founded and taught courses in Administrative Leadership for Intentional Equity, for school principals and district office administrators.

Dr. Frattura also researches and publishes in the area of Integrated Comprehensive Systems™, non-discrimination law for all learners, and the theoretical underpinnings of educational segregation. Dr. Frattura works extensively with urban, rural, and suburban school districts across the country as well as internationally to assist in the movement from reactionary systems of segregation to a proactive Integrated Comprehensive Systems™ of support through presentations, evaluations, and consultation. Dr. Frattura is a Co-Founder of Integrated Comprehensive Systems for Equity (ICS Equity).

Colleen A. Capper is Professor Emerita after serving 31 years in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has published extensively on leadership for social justice and equity. She is the editor of the book series Educational Leadership for Equity and Diversity (Routledge), and published four best-selling books:
