Book Study: Equity by Design
Oct 14 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Equity is one of the three core principles of Each Child Our Future, Ohio’s Strategic Plan for EducationThe plan states that the greatest education challenge remains equity in education achievement for each child.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework provides a way to remove the barriers that marginalized student populations face. In addition, UDL is an expectation for the 11 District Plan and can be found in ESSA as a means to providing flexible options for all students.

Together we will explore the UDL framework as we read and discuss Equity by Design by Mirko Chavin and Katie Novak. (Book is provided.) By the end of the book study, you will:

  • understand the connection between UDL and social justice
  • define the concept of social justice education
  • examine the five steps to creating the foundations of equity in the classroom
  • determine actionable next steps for your classroom/building/district using the UDL framework

CANCELED: Introduction to Universal Design for Learning
Jan 18 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework is a direct link in removing the barriers that our marginalized students face. It is found within the Every Student Succeeds Act as a means to provide flexible learning options to all students, and is a means of reaching Ohio’s One Goal of annually increasing the percentage of high school students who graduate, and one year later:

  • participate in some type of post-high school learning experience,
  • earn a living wage,
  • are enlisted in the military, or
  • are engaged in a meaningful vocation

Session 1 (for administrators only): We will set the stage for implementing the UDL framework in your school. Session goals:

    • define UDL and discuss why it is necessary
    • explore the components needed to support UDL implementation and prepare to apply it to your continuous improvement cycle
    • examine current structures to identify what supports are already in place, and areas that need strengthened
    • create action steps to operationalize UDL at the building level
    • discuss how to support teachers who are learning UDL and implementing it in their classrooms

The remaining sessions are for Building Leadership Teams (BLTs) and the administrator from Session 1.

Session 2: We will explore UDL together, examine its components and answer:

    • Why UDL?
    • What are the goals of the UDL framework?

Tue
CANCELED: Introduction to Universal Design for Learning
Feb 15 @ 9:00 am – 11:30 am

    • How does growth mindset influence the implementation of UDL?
    • What are the characteristics of an expert learner?

Session 3: We will:

    • dig deep into the UDL framework
    • examine the connection between the UDL framework and Social Justice

Session 4: This session will set you up for success as we:

    • discuss what UDL looks like in practice
    • explore the UDL Practice Profile and identify areas that are currently in place
    • discover where to start and begin UDL implementation process at the classroom level

Book Study: Equity by Design
Feb 17 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

equity by designKatie Novak and Mirko Chavin have provided a tool and a pathway for educators to begin the difficult conversations related to social justice and education. Their book, Equity by Design uses the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework as a means and connection to develop inclusive and socially just classrooms.

In this book study, participants will discuss these relevant topics and learn practical applications for using the UDL framework. We will discuss removing barriers that affect the students we serve, and put our learning into practice to create a culturally responsive learning environment for all students. Participants will be asked to respond to reflection questions between each meeting.
