This series designed specifically for preschool staff will increase your knowledge and practice of emergent literacy strategies for children, birth through age five.
Part 1: Introduction to Emergent Literacy & Teaching Early Phonological Awareness
Gain a greater understanding of emergent literacy and the importance of developing phonological awareness skills in young children. Participants will:
- explore the role of each lobe of the brain in the development of the “reading brain”
- learn the components of phonological processing and its contributions to early literacy development
- begin to understand the sequences of development in the areas of rhyming, alliteration, blending, and segmenting
- gain instructional strategies to facilitate development of phonological awareness skills
Part 2: Developing Oral Language & Vocabulary for Emergent Literacy
In this session, we will focus specifically on developing oral language and vocabulary skills in young children. Upon completion of this training, you will:
- understand the significance of oral language as a component of emergent literacy
- plan for explicit and intentional instruction to develop oral language skills in young children
- identify and explain the three tiers, or levels of vocabulary in text
- demonstrate instructional strategies, aligned with brain research, to build vocabulary and oral language
Part 3: Building Print Awareness through Interactive Read-Alouds
The final session is centered on using read-alouds as a strategy for building print awareness skills in young children. Content is focused on:
- understanding why print knowledge is important for emergent and early literacy
- identifying the four dimensions of print knowledge
- using books to develop print awareness and knowledge at the preschool level
- accessing materials to aid in classroom, library, or home implementation of print referencing techniques
- identifying and distinguishing books for shared reading to teach components of emergent literacy
