Requirement reminders for online makeup hours

Ohio Revised Code 3313.482 requires school districts, community schools, chartered nonpublic schools, and STEM schools to have online makeup hour plans in place by Aug. 1 each year, starting with the 2024-2025 school year. These plans allow schools to make up hours equivalent to no more than three school days through online delivery when closures occur under allowable circumstances, including hazardous weather conditions. Use of an online hours makeup plan remains optional.

If a school or district fails to adopt a plan or adopts a plan after Aug. 1, any online learning days used will not count toward meeting the minimum school-year requirement, and the district may need to add additional hours to its school-year calendar to comply with state law.

Schools and districts should work with their legal counsel when developing online makeup hour plans to ensure compliance with statutory requirements regarding synchronous instruction during online makeup hours.

Schools using a blended learning model or operating as an online school are not eligible to use these plans.
